In recent years, smart homes have become increasingly popular, thanks to advancements in technology and the affordability of smart devices. With smartphones and the internet of things (IoT) at our fingertips, we now have the power to control our homes from anywhere in the world.

My Home Automation Setup

At home, I’ve embraced the power of smart technology to make life easier and more enjoyable. My setup includes an array of smart devices, from plugs and lights to sensors and cameras, all seamlessly integrated into my Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 5 with an 8GB RAM and 256GB NVMe drive on a PCIe hat as well as a POE hat.

Zigbee

Using the Sky Connect USB device as a Zigbee controller, I’ve set up over 30 automations tailored to my family’s needs. Whether it’s feeding the fish or adjusting the heating, automation has made daily tasks a breeze. I’ve even dabbled in some DIY projects, like building my own fish tank temperature sensor using ESPHome.

Home Assistant

With the Home Assistant Companion app installed on our phones, my family and I stay connected and informed, receiving notifications about the kids’ safe arrival at school and back home.

CCTV

But it doesn’t stop there. I’ve integrated my Reolink CCTV cameras and Ring doorbell with Home Assistant for added security. A clever automation triggers the lights and speakers whenever someone approaches the door, giving us peace of mind.
