This policy explains what personal data is collected when you visit jackwent.co.uk, why, who it’s shared with, and the choices you have. I’ve tried to keep it plain and specific to how this site actually works.
Who I am
This is the personal website of Jack Went, based in the United Kingdom. I’m the data controller for personal data collected through the site. For anything privacy-related, email privacy@jackwent.co.uk.
The short version
- There are no accounts, sign-ups or forms on this site. I don’t ask for your name or email unless you choose to email me.
- Analytics cookies are off until you say yes in the cookie banner, and if you’re in the UK, EU or Switzerland, advertising cookies are off until you agree to them too. You can change your mind at any time with cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
- I use Google Analytics to understand which pages are useful and Google AdSense to show adverts that help pay for hosting.
- I don’t sell your personal data, and I don’t combine it with other data to identify you.
What’s collected and why
When you browse the site
Technical logs. Like almost every website, the servers that deliver this site handle your IP address, the page you requested, the time, and your browser’s user agent. This is needed to deliver pages and to protect the site from abuse. Any logs kept for troubleshooting or security are kept for no more than 30 days. Legal basis: legitimate interests (running and securing the website).
Analytics (Google Analytics, with your consent). If you agree to analytics cookies, Google Analytics collects information about how you use the site: pages visited, how you arrived (for example from a search engine), approximate location (country or city, derived from your IP address), device type, browser, operating system and screen size. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses. I use this only to see which guides and projects are useful, and only in aggregate. Legal basis: consent.
Advertising (Google AdSense). Adverts on this site are served by Google AdSense.
- If you agree to advertising cookies, Google and its partners may use cookies and similar identifiers to show adverts based on your interests and to measure how adverts perform. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve adverts based on your previous visits to this website and other websites. Google’s advertising cookies let it and its partners serve adverts to you based on those visits.
- If you don’t agree, Google may still show adverts, but they are non-personalised or “limited” adverts that don’t use cookies for personalisation. They may use non-identifying signals such as the page you’re reading and your approximate location to choose an advert, and to detect fraud.
You can learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and turn personalised adverts off at any time in Google’s Ads Settings at myadcenter.google.com. You can also opt out of personalised adverts from other advertising companies that use cookies at youronlinechoices.eu (UK and EU) or aboutads.info (US). Legal basis: consent for personalised advertising and advertising cookies; legitimate interests for serving non-personalised adverts and preventing ad fraud.
Google Tag Manager. Tag Manager is a tool for loading the analytics and advertising tags described above. It doesn’t set cookies or collect personal data itself, and the tags it loads respect your consent choices.
When you use the vulnerability feeds
The Vulnerability Feeds page shows headlines that this site’s server fetches from public RSS feeds. Your browser doesn’t contact those sources unless you click a link, in which case you leave this site and that site’s own privacy policy applies.
When you email me
If you email info@jackwent.co.uk, privacy@jackwent.co.uk or abuse@jackwent.co.uk, I receive your email address, your name if you include it, and your message. I use these only to reply and deal with your request, keep them only as long as needed for that, and don’t add you to any mailing list. Legal basis: legitimate interests (responding to your message), or the steps needed to handle a privacy request.
Cookies
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. This site doesn’t set any cookies of its own. It remembers your choice in your browser’s local storage instead. The cookies below are set by Google: analytics cookies only after you accept them in the banner, and, in the UK, EU and Switzerland, advertising cookies only after you agree to them.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
jw_cookie_consent | This site (stored in your browser’s local storage, not a cookie) | Remembers whether you accepted or rejected analytics cookies | Until you change it or clear your browser data |
FCCDCF, FCNEC | Google (consent message, once advertising is enabled) | Remembers your advertising choices | 13 months |
_ga, _ga_<ID> | Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors and sessions for statistics | 2 years |
__gads, __gpi | Google AdSense | Advert delivery, frequency capping and measurement | 13 months |
__eoi | Google AdSense | Advert security and fraud prevention | 6 months |
IDE, test_cookie | Google (doubleclick.net) | Personalised advertising; checking whether cookies are supported | 13 months; 15 minutes |
Google may change the names and lifetimes of its cookies; its current list is at policies.google.com/technologies/cookies.
Your choices. Use cookie settings at the bottom of any page to change or withdraw your consent. Withdrawing consent stops new cookies being used from then on, but doesn’t affect anything that happened before. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and opt out of Google Analytics on all websites with Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
Who data is shared with
- Google (Google LLC and Google Ireland Limited) for analytics, advertising and the cookie consent message. For advertising, Google acts as an independent controller of the data it collects; for analytics, Google processes data on my behalf.
- Hosting and network providers that deliver the website, only as needed to run it.
I don’t sell personal data. I’ll only disclose it otherwise if the law requires me to.
International transfers
Google may process data in the United States and other countries. Transfers from the UK to the US are covered by the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and otherwise by the International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, which Google uses.
How long data is kept
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Technical and security logs | Up to 30 days |
| Google Analytics data | Up to 14 months, then deleted by Google |
| Your analytics choice | Until you change it or clear your browser data |
| Your advertising choice (Google’s message) | 13 months, then you’ll be asked again |
| Emails you send me | As long as needed to deal with your message |
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access the personal data I hold about you
- have inaccurate data corrected
- have your data erased
- restrict or object to how it’s used, including objecting to processing based on legitimate interests
- data portability, where processing is based on consent
- withdraw consent at any time, using cookie settings or by contacting me
Much of the data described here is held by Google rather than by me, and isn’t linked to your name. If you make a request, I’ll help as far as I can and point you to Google’s own tools where that’s quicker. To make a request, email privacy@jackwent.co.uk. I’ll reply within one month.
If you’re unhappy with how your data has been handled, please contact me first. You also have the right to complain to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113.
Outside the UK. If you’re in the EU, you can also complain to your local data protection authority. If you’re in a US state with a consumer privacy law (such as California), you can opt out of personalised advertising, which may count as “sharing” under those laws, using myadcenter.google.com or your browser’s Global Privacy Control setting.
Children
This site is written for adult IT professionals and hobbyists, and, as the terms say, it’s intended for people aged 18 or over. It isn’t directed at children, and I don’t knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS, collects as little data as possible, and doesn’t store personal data in a database. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but I take reasonable steps to protect the data I’m responsible for.
Changes to this policy
If the way this site handles data changes, I’ll update this page and the “last updated” date at the top. Significant changes will also be reflected in the cookie banner where they affect your choices.
